Hopi weaver James Poley learned on his uncle’s upright weaving loom. It was that same loom he inherited as tools are passed down thru the clan only men are weavers and they pass the skill to down to their nephews. Poley hold one tool he believes to be at least 300 years old. He handlesit real gingerly since he believe if it would fall, it perhaps might shatter. The batten is known as a “sukua” in Hopi.
